Different Types of Carpet Padding

·        Foam Carpet Padding


o   Characteristics

-        Made from polyurethane foam

-        Soft and resilient

-        Available in thicknesses ranging from ¼” to ½”

-        Comes in low to medium-density options and offers various levels of cushioning

o   Features/Benefits

-        One of the least expensive options; ideal for budget-conscious projects

-        Provides a soft, cushioned feel underfoot to enhance the comfort of the carpet

-        Helps reduce noise by absorbing sound

-        Easy to handle during installation compared to denser options

o   Limitations

-        Tends to compress and break down faster, especially in heavy-traffic areas

·        Rubber Carpet Padding

o   Characteristics

-        Made from natural or synthetic rubber

-        Available in thickness ranging from ¼” to ½”

-        High-density, which provides strong support and durability

o   Features/Benefits

-        Highly durable and resistant to wear an tear, ideal for high-traffic areas

-        Firm, yet comfortable underfoot; provides good support while still being soft

-        Resistant to moisture, preventing growth of mold or mildew; good for areas with potential moisture issues

-        Helps with sound insulation by reducing noise and vibrations in the space

o   Limitations

-        More expensive than foam padding

-        Heavier than foam, making installation more difficult

-        Some can have a strong odor

·        Felt Carpet Padding

o   Characteristics

-        Made from recycled fibers, like wool or a blend of natural and synthetic materials

-        Available in thickness ranging from ¼” to ¾”

-        Comes in various densities, from low to

-        Often made from recycled materials, so it’s eco-friendly

-        Firm, supportive feel underfoot and keeps the carpet in place

-        Extremely soft, cushion-like feel, ideal for bedrooms and areas where comfort is a top priority

-        Adapts to the shape of your foot, relieving pressure pints and making it comfortable to walk on

-        Can be durable, especially in lower-traffic areas

o   Limitations

-        Tends to be more expensive

-        May not be best for high-traffic areas due to its compression over time

-        Creates a more comfortable walking surface

-        Reduces noise

o   Features/Benefits

-        Acts as a barrier against moisture

-        Minimizes stress on flooring

-        Controls Stains/easy to maintain

o   Limitations

-        May compress more easily long-term

-        Has a multicolored appearance due to being made from recycled foam

·        Wool Carpet Padding

o   Characteristics

-        Made from natural wool fibers, combined with other materials for added durability

-        Thickness ranges from ½” to ¾”

-        Medium to high density, giving solid support

o   Features/Benefits

-        Renewable, natural fiber, making it eco-friendly

-        Has natural insulating properties, helping to maintain comfortable temperatures in a room

-        Provide excellent sound insulation, so its good for reducing noise

·        Real Horsehair Padding

-        Natural material collected from manes and tails of horses

-        Soft to the touch and has a natural resilience to help maintain structure over time

-        Known for its longevity

-        Blended with other fibers like wool or cotton to enhance comfort and support with an airy structure allowing airflow

o   Features/Benefits

-        Provides superior cushioning and support

-        Absorbs moisture to reduce the risk of mold or mildew

-        Natural fibers help with thermal insulation

-        Effective at reducing noise and enhancing acoustics in a room

-        Eco-friendly

o   Limitations

-        More expensive than synthetic options

-        Not as widely available as synthetic pads

-        Not the best option for areas prone to high humidity or dampness due to break down over time

-        Heavier which makes it harder to install

-        May retain odors if exposed to moisture for too long or not properly cared for
