Research Initiatives Week 12- Sami Ford

 #11: Research initiatives:

1. Pile height is the length of the pile tufts above the backing; the length of the pile yarn that is incorporated in the backing is excluded. Pile yarn weight is the weight of the yarns used in the wear layer and those portions of the pile yarns that extend into the backing layer; expresses in ounces per square yard. Yarn loops are left uncut having a looplike structure, cut yarns are the cut looped yarns. The types are straight forward as demonstrated in the picture. Multilevel combines cut loops, uncut loops, and multiple pile heights producing broad possibilities for design variations and patterning.

2. CARE is the Carpet America Recovery Effort, to encourage recycling in carpet manufacture, recycling of post-consumer carpet, and designing for recyclability. The mission of CARE is to advance market-based solution that increase landfill diversion and recycling of post-consumer carpet, encourage design for recyclability and meet meaningful goals approved by the CARE Board of Directors” Their vision is for post-consumer carpet diversion and recycling to be economically, socially, and environmentally sustabinable for all stakeholders.

EF Contract focuses on the 4 R’s- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Return. They reuse 5,000 pounds of carpet samples each month, meaning they divert 60,000 pounds from landfills each year. They have a Flooring Reclamtion Program that facilitates used carpet and LVT, guaranteeing that it will not reach a landfill. This is a program that has been growing since 2009 and has reclaimed over 5.6 million pounds of post-consumer flooring from entering landfills!

Interface is another flooring company that works on sustainability. They have a few different aspects that they work on; reuse, recycle, and carbon reduction. In 1994 they started their sustainability journey, setting a goal of zero impact by 2020. In 2012 they helped to create a program to remove trash from the oceans. In 2016 they started Climate Take Back to help reverse global warming. In 2018 Nora joined their company creating more durable, high-performance flooring options (creating a longer lifespan for flooring, allowing less product waste). And in 2019, a year early they achieved Mission Zero Success creating a zero negative impact on the environment. In 2020, releasing their first carbon negative carpets and backings. Today, they are totally carbon neutral and continue to advance their sustainability goals!
