Padding plays a big role in providing comfort and support, especially when used in furniture, mattresses, and other upholstered products. Each type of padding has its unique characteristics, benefits, and applications. In this blog I will look at different padding types and what they are good for. This will include Rebond, synthetic horsehair, real horsehair, felt, rubber, and foam pads.
Rebond Padding (6 ounce & 8 ounce)
- Rebond padding is made from recycled foam pieces that are bonded together using a heat or chemical process. It’s available in different weights, such as 6-ounce and 8-ounce. The biggest difference between them is their density and thickness. Rebond pads are durable, economical, and environmentally friendly.
- 6-ounce Rebond: This is lighter and typically used for spaces that are not high traffic areas. It's also found in budget-friendly mattresses and cushions.
- 8-ounce Rebond: Has better durability and support, making it great for higher-end mattresses or commercial carpets.
Rebond Benefits:
- Cost-effective
- Environmentally friendly (made from recycled materials)
- Good for adding support and a longer life time to products
- Synthetic horsehair pads copy the properties of natural horsehair. This makes is a great a combination of softness and durability. These pads are often used in high end upholstered furniture.
Synthetic Horsehair Benefits:
- Resilient and firm, providing support while still providing comfort.
- Resistant to crushing over time.
- Provides a high end feel without using animal products.
Real Horsehair Pads
- Real horsehair has been a traditional material in upholstery for a long time. It's known for its great resilience and ability to retain its shape. Real horsehair pads are often used in high-end mattresses and upholstery.
Real Horsehair Benefits:
- Its natural stretchiness gives great support
- Strong against compression and wear

- Rubber pads are made from natural or synthetic rubber and are often used for their durability and shock-absorbing properties. These pads are commonly found in flooring, seating, and industrial applications.
Rubber Benefits:
- High durability and wear resistance
- Excellent shock absorption and impact resistance
- Great for spaces that need both cushioning and stability.
Foam Pads
- Foam pads are used in many different applications as well, like mattresses, furniture and car seating. They come in different densities, including memory foam, polyurethane foam, and high-density foam.
Foam Benefits:
- Can be used in many different spaces because of its firmness and density options
- Comfortable and supportive
- Cost-effective and easy to shape for the customers’ needs
