Special Considerations

Introduction

My name is Susie Kirsh and I am a senior here at Judson. I am from Buffalo Grove, IL, which is about 20-30 minutes away from campus. Originally, I chose Architecture as my major because it had a strong focus on math, which I enjoy, but when I started to understand architecture more and more I realized it lacked the amount of creativity I wanted in my future career. I knew I still wanted to pursue a career in the home improvement/design category, so when I talked to some friends who majored in Interior Design, I knew that was what I wanted to do: create a space where people can interact freely or seclude themselves from the rest of the world. Personalizing a space so that people feel most comfortable or the most productive brings me joy because I know it brings the people within the space satisfaction and a sense of pride. This applies specifically to residential interior design and, while I know it is a small(er) branch of the industry, it feels the most personal. Inviting someone into your home is one of the most personal things we can do, even if we don’t realize it. Therefore, designing a room, or an entire house, based off the homeowner’s request is, in my eyes, a huge sign of respect.

I have taken multiple online classes before. Some were hybrid and others were asynchronous, however, I’ve found asynchronous courses were more beneficial to me. I understand the assignments, due dates, and course information clearer because it is laid out neatly and in a way that is easier to understand. However, I know this class is hybrid, so I think as long as the due dates and assignments are clear, I will be just fine!

LEED/WELL

² - First green rating systems established, known as the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method

-Ten years later, the U.S. Green Building Council developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

² - Typical rating systems consist of credits and/or points that must be obtained in order to make a building 100% sustainable

² - Elements that are efficient, durable, renewable, and/or recycled are key in creating a sustainable building or space

² - Certain states require certain buildings to be of a specific certification based off the rating system - LEED rating system is the most used in the world and provides a framework for assessing and rating a building’s performance and overall environmental impact

² - Based off of energy use, water efficiency CO2 emissions reductions, and indoor environmental quality

²- WELL focuses on people’s health and wellness

² - Optimizes the building or project to benefit people’s health

² - LEED is designed to focus on buildings and WELL is designed to focus on the people

² - WELL explores the connection between the buildings where we spend 90% or more of our time and how the health and wellness impacts a buildings occupants
