Dashmesh’s Shuttle Loom With Jacquard:
In this video there was no commentary. But some key takeaways that I took away from it from simply watching the loom work are: the loom is extremely fast, there are many moving parts, they can make intricate patterns, the loom itself can be very tall, the loom may require assistance throughout the process, and that they process is a bit noisy.
In earlier weeks we learned about how a loom works and all the parts that it contains, but simply watching the machine work is fascinating and can help you learn a lot.
Recycling Plastic Bottles into Polyester Yarn on “How It’s Made”:
Polyester is made from oil, so recycling means that you get more mileage from a precious resource. Plastic bottles can be converted into chip form.
In this process pulses of hot air toss the chips giving them hard shells. They go through a dryer to get rid of moisture that would weaken the final product. A worm screw then moves the chips through heated pipes, which melt them into a thick liquid. The molten recycled polyester is then ready to be turned into yarn. It is pressed through a die plate, which is part of the spin pack, which includes a mesh filter, a metal distribution plate, and bits or shattered metal for extra filtration. This pack is then preheated so that the polyester will not harden as it flows through.
The product is then transferred to an opening from which the liquid polyester flows through 68 tiny holes in each disc that shape the recycled polyester into filaments. As they exit, they cool and harden. The yarn then travels around rollers into a compartment, where air buffets the yarn to entangle the filaments, which holds them together. A spool racks up the yarn, at this point the yarn is stiff. A machine then pulls the polyester yarn over heated rubber rollers, which stretches and realigns the molecules. It is then twisted and taken up by automated spools. At this point it is no longer stiff like dental floss, but flexible like wool yarn. In total, the process takes a couple of weeks. This yarn is then turned into materials that are less wasteful due to the recycling aspect.
