Eva Serrato
My name is Eva Serrato and I am Senior at Judson University. I am on the women's Cross county and Track team. My hometown is Gilberts IL, which is 15 minutes away from Judson. The reason why I picked interior design is because, growing up I always liked art and design because my mom was an art teacher, I was exposed to design and creating art at a young age. Over the years I wanted to pursue a career that would make me money, but also have a design aspect as well. I chose interior design because I love the design and problem-solving part of the job, I love the balance of creating and problem solving while also having fun designing and talking to clients.
My area of interest would be residential work, however, over the past couple years I have been leaning more towards commercial, specifically hospitality work. I feel that there are many interesting parts to designing a hospitality space. I am open to working in any space as long as I can continue to design and learn wherever I go.
I have taken many online interior design courses but nothing that focuses on learning textiles and the different materials that are used on a job. One way to be successful in this class is to review the material talked about in class and being sure to always do the homework, not only to earn a good grade, but I have learned over the years this is what helps me learn and retain knowledge the best.
LEED:
The organization LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was one of the first organizations to tackle the problem of sustainable design. LEED focuses on the environmental impacts that go into designing a project, such as, water conservation, energy efficiency, material selection, and many more. Over the years LEED has continued to develop new ways to ensure sustainability among design and one of the new generations of LEED standards is called LEED v4.1. This specific part of LEED focuses on human health care while also managing to set the bar higher by looking at carbon emissions and the longevity of buildings. When it comes to LEED, there are many different sections of LEED accreditation such as silver, gold, and platinum. There are also different sections of LEED when it comes to different types of buildings such as, LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations, LEED for Core and Shell, LEED for Commercial Interiors, LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenace, LEED for Existing Buildings: Volumes, LEED for Healthcare, LEED for Schools, LEED for Retail, LEED for Homes, LEED for Neighborhood Development, and LEED Volume, which is just planning for many projects and new construction. Green Globes origin was in Canada in 1996 under the name of BREEAM Canada for Existing Buildings. These programs are based on a point scale of 1000 that touch base on multiple categories.
WELL:
The organization WELL tackles the issues that face the health of the occupants in buildings. The materials and products chosen for a new design or even new building can have long lasting effects on people's well-being, not only physically but mentally if they are not chosen correctly. According to WELL, “The WELL Building Standard™ version 2 (WELL v2™) is a vehicle for buildings and organizations to deliver more thoughtful and intentional spaces that enhance human health and well-being. WELL v2 includes a set of strategies—backed by the latest scientific research—that aim to advance human health through design interventions and operational protocols and policies and foster a culture of health and well-being.” Some principles that WELL also includes in their standards are equitable, global, evidence-based, technically robust, customer-focused, and resilient. All these principles come into play when analyzing whether a building meets the WELL standards or not. The WELL scoring system focuses on seven main categories which are, air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind. Depending on how achievable and applicable the preconditions and optimizations are, the categories get a combined total score.
WELL and LEED:
The organizations WELL and LEED both focus on factors of sustainability and human health, therefore it is important to compare the two and look at how they should both be integrated into a design project. Organizations such as, USGBC and IWBI have created WELL+LEED certification by taking WELL V2 and LEED v4 BD+C, LEED v4 ID+C, LEED v4.1 BD+C, or LEED v4.1 ID+C and analyzing designs to see if they fit the mold of these standards. Both WELL and LEED focus on creating a more environmentally friendly space for people and taking care of the well-being of occupants inside buildings, therefore, when integrating both standards in a design can create an amazing outcome for everyone involved.
