#2 Research Initiatives- Sami Ford
The Carbon Leadership Forum
The Carbon Leadership Forum of the CLF goal is to “eliminate carbon in buildings and infrastructure by inspiring innovations and spurring change through collective action.” (Carbon Leadership Forum). They are achieving this goal in several different ways. They are encouraging people to reduce embodied carbon not only in construction but also in manufacturing and transportation. They achieve this by researching, educating, and fostering cross-collaboration. Embodied carbon, if you are not aware, is greenhouse gas emission attributed to materials. This is extremely bad for the environment. So, it is the Carbon Leadership Forum’s goal to entirely eliminate embodied carbon for the good of the planet and everyone in it. (Carbon Leadership Forum).
Architecture 2030
“Architecture 2030 is a non-profit, non-partisan and independent organization established in 2002 in response to the ongoing climate emergency” (Architecture 2030). Their mission is to design a solution to transform the built environment from greenhouse gases that are causing a climate crisis. Their main plan of action has two primary objects, which are to “Achieve a dramatic reduction in the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of the built environment by 2030, and a complete phase-out of fossil fuel CO2 emissions by 2040” hence the name 2030. Their second principle is to “Advance the development of sustainable, resilient, equitable, and zero-carbon buildings communities and cities.” (Architecture 2030) They are achieving these goals through design and planning, collaboration, education, and policies.
Habitable
Habitable or the Health Building Network goal is to build things in a way that does not hurt our environment. Habitable focuses on pollution, climate change, and equity, and solutions to fix problems related to these topics or strategies. “We envision a better future where decision-makers consider the full product lifecycle, making conscious choices to eliminate negative impacts on people and ecosystems along the way” (Habitable). Sharing how we should be conscious of what we use, and to use our stuff for their whole lifetime, not just buy the next new thing. Habitable uses science to help reverse the damage that has already been done to our planet but another key part to their organization is that they inform. They created a guide to show what kind of products can harm the environment all the way up to what products are good for the environment (Habitable).
