#3- Research Initiatives -Bethany Huizinga Snyder

 Blog 3: Research initiatives

The 3 websites we looked into were the Carbon Leadership Forum, Architecture 2030, and the Health Building Network. All of these organizations are focused on making the environment a better place through focusing on the building industry.

According to their website the Carbon leadership Forum, “accelerates the transformation of the building sector to radically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions attributed to materials (also known as embodied carbon) used in buildings and infrastructure.” (Carbon Leadership Forum) There vision is to transform and decarbonize the build environment and the building industry through things like the materials that are used. One of their slogans is “better buildings for a better planet.” (Carbon Leadership Forum) The website states that buildings make of almost half of the global CO2 emissions. The Carbon leadership forum wants to change that. They do this through providing research and resources to people as well as creating collaboration through the industry. This includes architects, interior designers, engineers, contractors and many other professions that have a hand in the building industry (Carbon Leadership Forum).

“Architecture 2030’s mission is to rapidly transform the built environment from the major emitter of greenhouse gases to a central solution to the climate crisis. For nearly two decades, we’ve provided the leadership and designed the actions needed to achieve the CO2 emissions reductions for a high probability of limiting planetary warming to 1.5°C.” (Architecture 2030) They have an action plan that consists of two main objectives. The first one is to have a dimitic reduction in CO2 emissions and energy consumed by 2030 and by 2040 have a complete phase-out of fossil fuel CO2 emissions. And the second objective is to “Advance the development of sustainable, resilient, equitable, and zero-carbon buildings communities and cities.” (Architecture 2030) They achieve this by focusing on the material used and how they were made, the government codes and how they can be improved and informing people to the best of their ability through research and conferences. (Architecture 2030)

And lastly the Health Building Networks now known as Habitable says, “Since 2000, we have pursued our mission and vision through three fronts: pollution reduction; climate change mitigation; equity and justice.” (Habitable) Over the past 20 years Habitable has come up with solutions that they utilize the market to have the most impact. Their goal is to reinvent the materials market in a way that helps the health of humanity and the world. Through their own research and others’ they have developed ways of being transparent in how and what chemicals they use as well as being transparent about their data and information. (Habitable)
